TAGMO IS MORE THAN A FOOD BUSINESS.

Our food tells stories of migration, cultural exchange and self-determination in the diaspora.

TAGMO opened in September 2021 on Front Street in Downtown Manhattan, overlooking the cobblestone streets of the South Seaport district and the breezy East River esplanade near the Lower East Side. At this port, ships once carried spices from India’s farmlands to Manhattan’s shore. Today, those spices bring our food to life.

Initially founded as an Indian confectionary company in 2019 by chef Surbhi Sahni, TAGMO was an evolution of her previous business, Bittersweet NYC.

In the wake of the pandemic, Surbhi expanded TAGMO’s online mithai shop to deliver regional homestyle meals to New Yorkers every week. The popularity of the meals opened the doors for Surbhi to bring her dream restaurant to life which she ran for over two years.

In January 2024, Surbhi pivoted TAGMO from a restaurant to a catering and events space with a seasonal mithai shop by appointment only..

Through it all, TAGMO continues to be a platform of support and collaboration with other brown, queer, local and women-led companies who share our ethos to make products that are delicious, sustainable and do social good.

What does tagmo mean?

TAGMO is the Bhutanese word for tigress.

The tigress is a feminist symbol of strength and empowerment in South Asian culture.

how did tagmo begin?

It all started with a dream. A literal dream of Surbhi’s about a tigress, and a life-long vision of hers to run a kitchen that employs (primarily) women and queer people.

what is the mission of tagmo?

TAGMO is a celebration of South Asian cuisine and mithai from home kitchens and street food stalls across the vast culturally diverse regions of India.

We use food to restore dignity to the legacies of home cooks, vegetable growers, rice farmers and spice wallahs who have cultivated regional cuisines for centuries.

TAGMO is a queer & women of color run business that pays above minimum-wages and ensures a safe workplace that is inclusive and affirming.
